As part of “Back to School Preparedness Week” New England Tutors hosted two workshops at the Portsmouth and Dover Chamber of Commerce. If you missed it, you can read up on the “Financial Planning for your Special Needs Child” by clicking the title or visiting our blog page. In addition, Cindy Ziobrowski presented “Advocating for Your Child” at both locations. During her workshop she highlighted advocating for your child and how to create a plan, or roadmap, for your child’s educational future. The workshops were well attended and received great feedback. If you were unable to attend we’re going to give you a quick overview and also share the slides Cindy presented. We hope it will be helpful to you and your student.
This presentation covered topics that included types of advocates as well as why teachers are limited in their ability to advocate, how parents are natural advocates, and basic advocacy skills. One of the most important topics covered was how to make a plan for your student which is important in understanding where you are, where you need to go, and what steps you’ll need to take in order to get there.
Cindy continued on to talk about what exactly an advocate is (anyone can advocate!), the types of advocates (Lay Advocates, Educational Advocates, and of course Parents), and the goals of advocating. In addition, you need to know the rules of the game (your legal rights), and how to plan and prepare appropriately.
If you’d like to go through everything Cindy covered at the workshops, including her Keys to Success, make sure to download the entire presentation below – it’s free!
